William Samuel Makin (1860- 1932) and Barbara Emery (1865 – 1951)
William was born on February 9th 1860, at Wollongong[1], and died at Bulli on July 23rd 1932[2], aged 72 years. Cause of death was Carcinoma and obstruction of the small bowel.
He married Barbara Emery at the Church of St. Michael, Wollongong, on June 26th 1884.[3]
Barbara was born in Northumberland England in 1865 and died at Woonona NSW May 1st 1951. Cause of death was Senility and Myocarditis.[4]
William worked as a Labourer, then as a Fireman at the Mount Kiera Mine. At the South Bulli Colliery he became the Driver of a Steam Locomotive on the coal trains.[5] The coal was taken in skips on the train from the Colliery to the South Bulli Jetty, where it was loaded into ships bound for various ports. He is said to have been the Driver of the first train onto the Jetty, which was a Gala Day with Flags, Bunting, and the usual Officials.

Barbara Emery migrated from Northumberland U.K. with her
Father, George and her Mother, Jane, and eight other children. They sailed out
to Australia on a ship named “La Hogue”, arriving in Sydney on September 16th
1879[6]. Barbara
was 14 years old and the third child. George Emery was employed as a Coal Miner
at Osborne Wallsend Colliery, Mt. Kiera. He worked until October 10th
1914, and died the next day aged 79 years. Jane, his wife, died at Bulli on
June 14th 1934, aged 95 years.

Another Colliery
Fatality
On Tuesday morning Thomas Joseph
Makin, a miner was killed in the Excelsior mine by a fall of stone. Charles H.
Hervey reports he was wheeling for Makin in No1 west, saw deceased filling a
skip, an a minute later ,look at the roof, grab his lamp & run. Then 6 or 7
tons of stone fell & covered him. Believed that when deceased was
extricated he was dead. An inquest was opened by the Deputy Coroner, Mr. James
Kirby. Mrs. Makin deposed that her husband was 40 years of age, a native of Mt
Kiera (son of William Makin), he had been twice married and there was a family
of seven. He was uninsured. The inquest was adjourned to next Tuesday.
